Fixing Portal and Half-Life 2: Episode Two Audio Problems
As are many of you who are reading this, I am one of the brave people that woke up bright and early on October 10th, 2007, expecting to play The Orange Box in all of its glory.
After allowing Steam to decrypt the GCFs, I launched Portal and started a new game. To my surprise, I was not greeted by the familiar robotic speech we were introduced to in the trailer. This is probably one of my favorite parts of the game and to be without it almost makes me not want to play.
You may have seen an error message similar to this one in your console:
Failed to load sound "vo\aperture_ai\00_part1_entry-1.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository
Even Episode 2 was plagued with this problem as I could not hear Alyx's voice either.
Luckily, I have found a solution. Follow these steps to fix the problem:
- Open either Portal or HL2: EP2 and click "Options".
- Click the "Audio" tab and change the option "Audio (Spoken) Language" to one of the other three choices.
- The game will now prompt you to restart the game. Select this option and restart Steam before attempting to play again.
- Finally, change the language back to English and restart Steam once more to ensure that the correct files have been downloaded.
If all went well, you should now be able to hear people speaking, as well as any other wav based sounds. Have fun and be sure to spread the word about this solution.
